Carving as an art form undoubtedly originates from peasant northern wooden
architecture. Even in pre-Mongol Rus times, the northerners were considered unrivaled
builders. The most common carving motifs were solar rosettes, images of a
horse, bird, tree of life, solar rook, geometric ornamentation (rhombuses, oblique crosses).
