The Earth and the Sun, a special case of the «white light», so to speak, were also depicted on spinning wheels.
The most complete and successful decipherment of the symbols of three-edged carving was made by B. A.
Rybakov, who emphasized, first of all, the saving functions of the geometric pattern. In his
opinion, the ornamentation of the spinning wheel as a whole «expressed the idea of day and night, the cycle of the day».
B. A. Rybakov considers the huge «solar circle», dominating in the decoration of most North Russian spinning wheels
not as a symbol of the sun, but as a symbol of shining inexplicable «white
light». In the lower part of the Vologda spinning wheel blade was usually placed a schematic
image of the earth in the form of crossed squares, rhombuses and triangles, above it —
a solar sign or a symbol of «white light» (the Universe) with rays turned inward. Earrings on
the lower part of the blade depicted respectively the rising and setting sun, and crowning
the blade «gorodki» - its daily path.
